The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday warned the public across the Philippines to avoid overeating unhealthy food, smoking, and drinking alcohol during the Christmas holidays as it recorded an increase in holiday-related ailments and outlined measures on how health facilities respond to these cases.

The DOH said health facilities nationwide reported more cases of hypertension, high blood sugar, stomach problems, and other lifestyle-related conditions that commonly occur during the holiday period.

The agency said many of the cases involve adults who attend multiple gatherings, consume large portions of food high in fat, sugar, and salt, and drink alcoholic beverages in excess.

The department said health workers in hospitals and clinics observed that some patients experience sudden spikes in blood pressure and blood sugar levels after heavy holiday meals.

The DOH warned that individuals with existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease face higher risks of complications when they overindulge in food and alcohol during celebrations.

The DOH reminded the public to continue following regular medication schedules during the holidays and to avoid skipping maintenance drugs despite busy gatherings and travel.
