SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio won’t be hosting the 2028 Democratic National Convention, despite Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ early efforts to pitch the city.
The DNC on Monday announced it had narrowed its list of finalists to Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia—leaving Texas off the list entirely.
Jones had highlighted San Antonio as “bold, inclusive and emblematic of the American future” in a July 2025 letter to organizers, pointing to the city’s convention center, military presence, and civic engagement as key strengths.
Her outreach even drew an ethics complaint from a local resident, claiming the use of official letterhead amounted to misuse of city resources. The Ethics Review Board dismissed the complaint in October, noting the letter was initiated by Visit San Antonio, the city’s tourism office.
The Republican National Convention, meanwhile, has already chosen Houston as its host city for 2028.
DNC officials say they will visit the five remaining finalist cities this spring before making a final selection for the convention scheduled Aug. 7-10, 2028.
