Galveston County Precinct One Constable Mac Sanford is addressing food insecurity through a unique initiative involving “Blessing Boxes” in Texas City, Texas. This initiative aims to help families struggling to afford basic meals.

A recent study by Feeding America reveals that more than 10% of the population in Galveston County faces food insecurity. Deputy Sanford has focused his efforts on providing for this demographic by installing large plastic containers filled with nonperishable food items such as soups, beans, and bread.

So far, three Blessing Boxes are stationed throughout Texas City, with plans to add four more. Sanford and his fiancée, Kristi, personally stock these boxes, often using coupons to maximize the impact of their budget. They have found ways to supply 38 meals for $54.

Community volunteers and local residents have joined the effort, contributing by purchasing extra groceries or donating items from their own pantries. According to Dustin Oliver of Come and See Friends Church, the boxes see frequent use, with one to two people arriving every half hour to take advantage of the resources.

For many, especially those on fixed incomes, the Blessing Boxes offer more than just food. Connie Onhiser, a local resident, expressed gratitude for the sense of dignity and relief the boxes provide. Angie Dominguez, another recipient, described the initiative as a true blessing.

Sanford extends his aid beyond food. His truck often serves as a mobile department store, providing essentials like clothing and shoes alongside the food donations. Leroy Smith from Hitchcock shared his appreciation for receiving much-needed items, including shoes.
