MANILA, Philippines– Mamamayang Liberal Representative Leila de Lima has filed House Bill No. 5131, seeking to strengthen the organizational and operational framework of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
De Lima’s proposal comes after Cavite Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga suggested abolishing the maritime law enforcement agency amid rising tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
The measure aims to enhance the PCG’s capacity to safeguard the country’s maritime zones and address existing administrative and resource constraints.
De Lima stressed the need for a more capable and well-equipped maritime agency to respond effectively to security challenges in the WPS.
The House of Representatives is expected to deliberate on the proposed legislation in the coming weeks.
Maritime experts and PCG officials have yet to issue statements regarding the bill.
The proposed reforms come as the Philippines continues to assert its sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea amid ongoing regional tensions.
