A mosquito trap in northern Hays County tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Hays County Health Department confirmed.

The positive result came from a routine surveillance effort conducted by local health authorities. Officials said this is the first confirmed detection of the virus in the county this year.

No human cases have been reported so far.

In response, the health department has increased mosquito monitoring and control operations in the affected area. Residents are urged to take preventive measures such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating standing water around homes.

Health officials advised residents to remain cautious, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. The department also encourages the public to report dead birds or areas with high mosquito activity.

West Nile Virus spreads when mosquitoes bite infected birds and later transmit the virus to humans. While most cases are mild, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that the virus can cause serious illness in some individuals.

The Hays County Health Department continues to coordinate with state agencies to expand mosquito control and public education efforts throughout the mosquito season.
