Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) is nearing the completion of the $2 billion Silver Line project. This major development promises to connect Plano to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The Silver Line is set to enhance regional connectivity across the northern parts of Dallas, running through seven cities in three counties: Tarrant, Dallas, and Collin. Construction is on course, and is expected to be completed by late 2025 or early 2026.

The Silver Line project is progressing with an important milestone achieved in the construction phase. State-of-the-art vehicles are nearing completion in Salt Lake City, Utah, and they are poised to begin the journey to their new home. Testing of these vehicles will occur along the Silver Line corridor.

The newly built Silver Line equipment maintenance facility in Plano has been established as a pivotal part of this project. The 40,000 square-foot facility will serve as the central hub for cleaning, maintaining, and refueling these vehicles. This facility stands ready to streamline operations once the Silver Line officially opens for service.

DART intends to initiate train car testing along the new Silver Line, marking a significant step towards the finalization of the project. Commuters can expect to see these tests taking place in various sections, including between Richardson and Plano. End-to-end testing of the Silver Line is projected to take place by the summer of 2025, according to DART officials.

DART’s Silver Line will cover approximately 26 miles, providing a regional rail service that will enhance access across multiple cities. This development represents a critical investment in regional transportation infrastructure, in line with DART’s plans to expand and improve transit services.

Residents and commuters in the area are advised to anticipate potential traffic implications during the testing phase. Testing schedules indicate activities will often occur from Sundays, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Train operations will include horn soundings and lights, which are standard safety measures during the testing phase.

The Silver Line is set to offer improved connectivity for daily commuters, linking various employment centers, educational institutions, and residential areas. DART anticipates that this line will ease travel constraints and create seamless transit options for thousands of passengers.

The Silver Line project underscores DART’s ongoing commitment to providing efficient and reliable public transit solutions. With its anticipated completion, the line will join DART’s existing network, which currently includes the Red, Blue, Green, and Orange lines. These lines together form one of the longest light rail systems in the United States, with 93 miles of track and service to 65 stations across nine cities.

Stakeholders involved in the development of the Silver Line aim for a successful launch, and they are currently focusing on ensuring all elements of the project meet safety and operational standards. The process involves rigorous testing, careful monitoring, and adjustments as needed to align with the expected quality and efficiency benchmarks.

The Silver Line project remains a significant undertaking for DART, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to regional transportation. As testing continues and infrastructure development progresses, DART remains committed to delivering a transit solution that meets the needs of the community it serves, with a focus on sustainability and innovation.
