DALLAS — The Dallas City Council has approved plans for a new housing community for homeless veterans on 7.3 acres of city-owned land in southern Dallas, officials said Wednesday.
The project, called Veterans Community Project Village, will be built west of the Dallas VA Medical Center near Mentor Avenue.
The development will include 50 tiny homes intended to house veterans experiencing homelessness and help transition them into permanent housing. The site will also include a community center, dog park, walking paths, and a grilling area.
The Veterans Community Project, a Kansas City-based nonprofit, will lead fundraising for the $15 million project. The organization must raise $4 million by Dec. 31, 2027, to retain control of the property.
City officials said all veterans will be eligible to live in the community, including those who do not qualify for Veterans Affairs benefits.
Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said the project will provide supportive housing services and help reduce veteran homelessness in the city.
Bryan Meyer, co-founder of Veterans Community Project, said the development will provide long-term support for veterans experiencing homelessness in Dallas.
The city did not announce a construction start date or completion timeline.
Officials said Dallas will become the seventh city in the country to open a Veterans Community Project Village. In other locations, residents typically stay about 11 months, with most transitioning to permanent housing, though stays are not time-limited.
