DALLAS, Texas — Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison and CEO Rick Welts addressed the controversial trade of Luka Doncic in a private media briefing held at the American Airlines Center.

The closed-door session focused on the decision to send Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for multiple players and future draft picks.

Harrison, speaking publicly for the second time since the trade, told selected media members that he has no regrets about the move.

He emphasized that the decision was made in the franchise’s best long-term interests, despite backlash from fans and skepticism from NBA analysts.

“This was the most strategic move we could make for the future of the team,” Harrison said during the meeting. “It wasn’t easy, but we’re focused on building a sustainable, competitive roster.”

Harrison was joined by Welts, who recently joined the Mavericks organization. Welts expanded on the team’s broader strategy, including business development goals and efforts to position the franchise for long-term success. Both leaders acknowledged the intensity of public reaction and the emotional toll of trading a player seen as the face of the Mavericks.

Doncic, 25, was considered a cornerstone of the team, known for his elite performance and leadership on the court. His departure marked a significant shift in the Mavericks’ roster and strategy, sparking debate among fans and league observers.

During the session, Harrison addressed questions about the trade’s timing, the players acquired in return, and the team’s roadmap for future seasons. He assured reporters that all decisions were guided by the front office’s commitment to growth and eventual playoff contention.

The meeting, held less than 24 hours after media were notified, was part of the team’s effort to clarify its decision-making process.

However, its private format drew criticism from some who viewed it as lacking transparency. Others saw it as a deliberate attempt to control the narrative amid heightened scrutiny.

Welts spoke about the importance of maintaining fan engagement and confidence in the franchise. He outlined plans to enhance the Mavericks’ community outreach and overall market presence, reinforcing the team’s dedication to its supporters despite the unpopular trade.

Both executives acknowledged the difficulty of trading a high-profile player but reiterated their confidence in the new direction. They emphasized the importance of long-term planning in professional sports and the need to make decisions that support sustained success.

“We understand the reaction,” Harrison said. “But we’re focused on building something that lasts.”

The Mavericks’ front office will continue to monitor the impact of the trade and assess team performance in the coming months.
