COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M University will begin construction Sept. 30 on a new Meat Science & Technology Center at its College Station campus, replacing a facility that has served the university since 1986.
Crews will build the 77,902-square-foot facility at 3844 Finfeather Road. The center will include a small meat processing plant, laboratory and teaching facilities.
Construction is expected to finish Feb. 16, 2028.
New center expands research
G. Cliff Lamb, director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, said the facility will expand the university’s meat science research capabilities through advanced technologies.
The center will support research and education focused on animal agriculture and global food systems.
Texas A&M initially planned to build the center at Texas A&M-RELLIS in Bryan. However, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents voted March 27 to move the project to the main College Station campus.
The regents also approved more than $18 million in additional funding, bringing the project’s total cost to more than $133 million.
Meat science program dates to 1926
Texas A&M has operated a meat science program since 1926 as part of its agricultural education and research programs.
Students can study meat chemistry, microbiology, processing techniques and meat judging. The program also offers coursework related to barbecue.
The new center will replace the Rosenthal Meat Science and Technology Center, which opened in 1986.
