City of Houston, Harris County clash over homelessness funding

HOUSTON, Texas– The City of Houston and Harris County remain at odds over the use of $8 million approved by the Harris County Commissioners Court for homelessness services.

Houston’s housing department claims the funds will support the Mayor’s Homelessness Action Plan. However, Harris County’s housing director has clarified that the money is not designated for any specific city initiative.

While both parties emphasize their commitment to addressing homelessness, they diverge on how to allocate and apply available resources.

The $8 million is part of broader efforts by both the city and county to reduce homelessness across the region. Officials from both sides are continuing discussions to determine how the funding will be used.

Although Houston and Harris County have historically partnered on homelessness programs, the current dispute highlights challenges in aligning strategies. Neither side has announced a resolution timeline.
