The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority received a $46 million federal grant in Texas to replace its maintenance facility and upgrade transit support operations.

The grant will fund construction of a new maintenance complex to replace an older structure used for servicing and repairing the agency’s bus fleet. CCRTA operates public transportation services in the Corpus Christi region.

Federal funds will support design and construction of a maintenance facility with workspaces for mechanics, technicians, and support staff.

CCRTA officials said the facility will provide safer work areas for employees servicing buses and other transit vehicles.

The project will introduce equipment for inspection, repair, and preventive maintenance of the fleet. The new complex will expand maintenance capacity to support current routes and future service growth.

The project replaces infrastructure that has operated for decades and does not meet current standards for safety and efficiency. The existing building has limited space for diagnostic tools, lifts, and repair areas for newer transit technologies.

The grant will help the agency adapt maintenance operations for fleet needs, including potential low-emission or zero-emission vehicles. Federal transportation officials awarded the funding under a competitive grant program for public transit capital projects.

The $46 million grant will cover a substantial portion of the cost to replace and modernize the facility. CCRTA will coordinate planning, engineering, and construction schedules according to federal requirements and follow procurement rules for design, construction, and equipment contracts.

CCRTA expects the layout to reduce vehicle downtime by improving the flow of buses through inspection and repair. The agency anticipates enhanced maintenance capacity will keep more buses in service during peak times.

The project will incorporate features to protect operations during extreme Gulf Coast weather. CCRTA plans to design the building to withstand hurricane-force winds and support evacuation, emergency transit, and post-storm recovery. The agency will coordinate with emergency management partners for hurricane-response planning.
