MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Sunday dismissed reports of a possible impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., calling them “unsubstantiated.”
Palace Press Secretary Claire Castro said the statement came in response to remarks from a lawmaker about potential impeachment, which she described as “unsubstantiated statements allegedly coming from the supporters of a certain politician.”
“The President remains committed to leading and producing results for the Filipino people. He respects the existing constitutional processes and believes that any actions taken by members of Congress will be driven by facts, the law, and national interest,” Castro said. “The administration will not speculate on rumours or political maneuverings.”
The remarks came after Rep. Egay Erice of Caloocan’s 2nd District told ABS-CBN News that some group leaders contacted him, asking him to endorse an impeachment complaint against Marcos. One of the cited grounds was alleged betrayal of public trust, which is recognized as a constitutional basis for impeachment.
Erice said he declined the invitation, adding that he will not endorse any measures against Marcos or former President Rodrigo Duterte. He also noted that under new Supreme Court rules, all impeachment matters must first be referred to the House Committee on Justice.
