CANNES, France — Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023, for his film It Was Just an Accident.
Panahi, who has been banned from leaving Iran for over 15 years, received the award during the festival’s closing ceremony.
Cate Blanchett presented the prestigious award to Panahi, recognizing his work despite significant travel restrictions. Panahi has faced political challenges in Iran, including imprisonment three years ago, during which he participated in a hunger strike.
For over 15 years, Panahi has created films clandestinely in Iran. His notable previous works include This Is Not a Film and Taxi. It Was Just an Accident, a revenge thriller, attracted international acclaim at the festival.
