The trend involves vocalizing “Eyyyy” while forming a “Y” shape with your hand—thumb and pinky out, other fingers curled down. Shaking your hand is optional. This gesture, known globally as the “shaka” or “hang loose” sign, has roots in Hawaiian culture and is commonly associated with surfing and hip-hop.
In the Philippines, the trend has been popularized by BINI, the nation’s girl group, particularly through member Sheena Catacutan. Sheena’s frequent use of the gesture has led to its widespread adoption among fans and beyond, symbolizing a message of positivity and fun.
“I’m surprised to see it among casual fans. I’ve been seeing ‘Eyyyy’ here and there. I actually do not know what to feel about it,” Sheena told ABS-CBN News on Saturday. “I don’t know how to respond. Eyy ka muna, eyyyy.”
The catchphrase has become a playful, even hopeful, response on social media, used in a variety of contexts—from expressions of romantic longing to everyday surprises and frustrations.
The expression gained momentum in early July after a video of Sheena at a BINI meet-and-greet was posted by user @softlysheena, capturing the hearts and hands of Pinoys everywhere.
