Virginia Beach police sergeant faces $1.6M lawsuit from injured bicyclist

A Virginia Beach police sergeant is facing a $1.6 million lawsuit filed by a bicyclist who claims she sustained severe injuries after an incident involving the officer.

The woman alleges that the sergeant opened his car door into a designated bike lane, causing her to crash and suffer significant physical harm.

Legal documents outline the bicyclist’s assertion that the sergeant was negligent by failing to check for oncoming cyclists before opening his car door, ultimately leading to the collision.

The lawsuit seeks damages to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other related costs resulting from the crash.

According to the legal filing, the incident occurred when the officer allegedly opened his car door without looking for approaching cyclists in the bike lane.

The door caused an obstruction that led to the plaintiff crashing into it, resulting in extensive injuries that required significant medical treatment.

The Virginia Beach Police Department has not issued a public statement regarding the lawsuit or the allegations against the sergeant, as its policy typically refrains from commenting on ongoing legal matters.
