SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A fire that broke out overnight on the south side of Houston has resulted in the death of an 11-year-old child and the hospitalization of several firefighters.

The blaze, which engulfed a mobile home, is now considered a total loss by authorities.

The Houston Fire Department responded to reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from the mobile home.

Upon arrival, firefighters worked to control the fire and rescue any potential victims, but the severity of the blaze made it impossible to save the home.

The child was found deceased at the scene, though their identity has not been released pending family notification.

Several firefighters sustained injuries during the firefighting and rescue efforts and were transported to a nearby hospital.

The nature and extent of their injuries have not been disclosed, but they are confirmed to be related to the fire suppression work.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by local authorities.

Fire officials are collaborating with law enforcement to determine whether foul play was involved or if the fire was accidental.

Investigators are working to assess the scene and gather more details about the incident.

The fire department has issued a statement extending condolences to the family of the deceased child and wishing a swift recovery for the injured firefighters.

They have also reminded residents of the importance of fire safety, urging people to check smoke detectors and practice fire escape plans.

Further updates are expected as the investigation continues. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the fire to come forward and assist with the ongoing inquiry.
