Austin Independent School District’s (ISD) plan to close and consolidate several schools has faced increased opposition after a protest rally followed a contentious school board meeting on Thursday night, Oct. 5, in Austin, Texas.
The district aims to close 13 campuses, including Barrington, Becker, Bryker Woods, Dawson, Maplewood, Oak Springs, Palm, Ridgetop, Sunset Valley, and Widén elementary schools, along with Bedichek and Martin middle schools, and Winn Montessori School.
The plan, announced by Austin ISD, involves boundary changes that affect 98% of schools, the relocation of one program to a new campus, and the repurposing of six schools for new programming. Superintendent Matias Segura’s office announced efforts to save $9.6 million by reducing central office staff by 20%.
Protesters, including families and community members, expressed concerns during the Thursday night meeting and subsequent rally. The fight to keep Govalle Elementary School open was a focal point of the opposition’s local perspective.
