AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Independent School District (AISD) released an updated school closure and consolidation plan on Friday, November 10, ahead of a scheduled school board vote on November 20.
The plan, announced by AISD, aims to address a $19.7 million budget shortfall that the district attributes to factors including the COVID-19 pandemic. The revised proposal removes three schools from the original closure list of 13 and postpones changes to school boundaries until next year.
Superintendent Matias Segura will discuss the plan and its implications during a public press conference at 4:30 p.m. on November 10.
AISD officials said the closures and consolidations are intended to provide immediate financial savings while supporting long-term budget stability. The district outlined criteria for selecting schools, including enrollment levels and facility conditions, and is working to ensure that students affected by closures can access quality education at nearby schools.
The school board’s vote on November 20 will determine whether the plan moves forward. AISD has engaged with parents, educators, and community members throughout the process and said it will continue to provide updates as the plan progresses.
