Dozens of students, parents, and teachers gathered outside Pease Elementary School in Downtown Austin on Sunday to protest a proposal that could close 13 schools within the Austin Independent School District (ISD).
Protesters expressed deep concern about the potential impact of the closures on students’ education and community stability. Organizers rallied community members to voice opposition to the district’s plan, calling for greater transparency and public involvement.
Austin ISD officials explained that the proposed closures are part of a broader effort to address declining enrollment and budget limitations.
Parents and teachers voiced fears that the closures could result in overcrowded classrooms and longer commutes for students. Many emphasized that neighborhood schools play a vital role in fostering community engagement and student development.
Officials said all comments and concerns will be considered as part of the evaluation process.
Pease Elementary is among the campuses identified in the proposal, making it a focal point for community resistance.
