Families in Austin, Texas, raised concerns over Austin Independent School District’s plan to close and consolidate 13 schools.

The district announced the proposal to address budget shortfalls and under-enrollment.

Parents and community members attended public meetings and questioned the effect of the closures on students and neighborhood stability.

Austin ISD officials presented the draft plan and collected feedback from affected households and stakeholders. The proposal includes the reassignment of students to nearby campuses. Families said the reassignment could increase travel distance, enlarge class sizes, and weaken community ties.

District representatives said the plan intends to optimize resources and improve student services across the system. The discussions between parents and officials grew tense as families argued for the preservation of neighborhood schools.

Austin ISD said it will review all feedback before issuing a final decision. The district expects to complete the review process before implementing any changes. Officials said community input will shape the course of the closure and consolidation plan.
