‘Anger’ may tip the scales in Houston City Council runoff ahead of election day

Voters across Houston will decide who fills a citywide at-large Houston City Council seat in a runoff election on Saturday, Dec. 13, after the current council member stepped down to run for Harris County Judge, with early voting underway through Tuesday, Dec. 9.

Election officials place the at-large council seat on every ballot in Houston because it represents the entire city rather than a single district.

City records show that the current at-large council member vacated the position to pursue a campaign to replace the Harris County Judge, triggering the need for the runoff.

The runoff election follows a general election in which no candidate secured the majority of votes required to win the at-large seat outright.

The Houston City Council consists of district and at-large positions, and the outcome of the runoff will help shape policy decisions on citywide issues.

Harris County election administrators oversee early voting and election day procedures for the city council runoff.

Election workers operate designated early voting locations through Dec. 9 to give Houston residents multiple days to cast ballots before election day.

Officials prepare polling places for Dec. 13 with voting machines, ballots, and staff to accommodate eligible voters across the city.

Campaigns for the at-large seat continue outreach to registered voters during the early voting period and in the days leading up to the Dec. 13 runoff.
