DALLAS, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott highlighted Texas laws on border security, voting, school choice and foreign land ownership during a speech Thursday at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, calling them examples of “common sense” policies.
Abbott also said Texas would move to ban Sharia law in the state and cited his executive order designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as terrorist organizations.
“We are not waiting on Washington, D.C.,” Abbott said. “We will fully ban Sharia Law in Texas.”
A lawsuit challenges Abbott’s executive order. The U.S. State Department has not designated CAIR as a foreign terrorist organization. It has designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood and Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations.
Abbott also criticized Democrats over the issue of affordability, saying they were “gaslighting the public about affordability.”
Affordability remains a major concern for voters, according to polling cited in the report. Abbott has also campaigned on affordability measures, including eliminating school property taxes, capping drug costs and requiring data center projects to cover infrastructure and power-generation costs associated with their facilities.
During his speech, Abbott also highlighted laws that prevent Russia, China and Iran from purchasing land in Texas.
