HOUSTON — Houston Landing, a nonprofit news organization based in Houston, Texas, closed operations after its leadership said financial challenges forced the outlet to cease publishing.

Houston Landing launched in February 2023 and focused on independent, nonpartisan reporting on issues affecting Houston residents. The newsroom published thousands of stories during its more than two years of operation and reported reaching millions of readers in the Houston area.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Bhatia announced the closure in a farewell message posted on the organization’s website on May 15. He said financial pressures prevented the newsroom from continuing its work.

In the weeks before the shutdown, Houston Landing reported receiving multiple journalism awards and recognitions for its reporting. The organization said the honors reflected the impact of its coverage.

Houston Landing thanked its readers, supporters, and staff members for their support and participation in the newsroom’s mission.

The farewell message marked the final post on Houston Landing’s website and confirmed the end of the organization’s operations.
