Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, proposed breaking up large technology companies including Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook.
She discussed the plan during an interview with CBS News political correspondent Ed O’Keefe at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin as part of her 2020 presidential campaign.
The proposal includes reversing certain mergers, such as separating Amazon from Whole Foods, Facebook from Instagram, and Google from its advertising network.
Warren also called for increased scrutiny of future mergers and acquisitions in the tech industry.
Warren emphasized the enforcement of antitrust laws, citing past breakups of Standard Oil and AT&T as precedents. She stated that restoring competition could benefit consumers and smaller businesses by increasing market opportunities.
