MANILA, Philippines– Santa Rosa City Representative Dan Fernandez on Thursday urged President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to certify as urgent legislative bills proposing penalties for spreading disinformation and enhancing scrutiny of misinformation on social media.

Fernandez made the call during the final hearing of a House tri-committee, which focused on the impact of false information on public perception and decision-making.

Presidential Communications Office Secretary Jay Ruiz highlighted concerns about misinformation, disinformation, and fake news on social media, citing their effect on Filipinos’ ability to make informed decisions.

Surigao del Sur 2nd District Representative Johnny Pimentel noted that Ruiz’s remarks underscored the need for legislative action.

The House continues to deliberate on these proposals amid growing concerns about the influence of fake news. President Marcos has yet to decide on certifying the bills as urgent, a step that would accelerate their legislative process.

The hearing involved officials from the Presidential Communications Office and legislators, highlighting the government’s focus on addressing misinformation challenges and promoting online accountability.
