Liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung is projected to win South Korea’s presidential election held Tuesday, according to a joint exit poll conducted by three major South Korean TV networks.

The poll, conducted by KBS, MBC, and SBS, showed Lee receiving 51.7% of the votes, while his main opponent, conservative candidate Kim Moon Soo, earned 39.3%.

The election took place two months after conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol left office following his imposition of martial law.

Voters participated amid political unrest and heightened tensions following recent events in the country.

Pre-election surveys had indicated Lee’s likely victory, with the election generating significant public interest.

The incoming administration will face economic and social challenges as it assumes office.
