Pop icon Britney Spears reprimanded for smoking during flight

FILE - In this April 12, 2018 file photo, Britney Spears arrives at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif. Spears has been granted a restraining order against a former confidante who she says has been harassing her family. A judge Wednesday, May 8, 2019, ordered the man, 44-year-old Sam Lutfi, to stay at least 200 yards from Spears, her parents and her sons. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP, File)

Britney Spears acknowledged on social media that she smoked a cigarette and consumed alcohol aboard an airplane, mistakenly believing that smoking was permitted on the flight.

In a statement posted to her Instagram account, Spears said a friend lit her cigarette, which led her to think smoking was allowed. She also cited the aircraft’s drink holder configuration as contributing to her assumption.

Spears’ actions are in potential violation of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, which prohibit smoking on all commercial flights operating to and from the United States. The FAA enforces these rules to protect passenger safety and air quality.

As of now, no legal actions or penalties have been publicly confirmed. The airline involved has not released a statement regarding the matter.

Spears’ Instagram post did not mention whether she was reprimanded or received a warning from the airline or federal authorities.

Smoking bans on commercial aircraft have been in place for decades, and passengers are routinely reminded of this policy before and during flights.

The FAA continues to emphasize the importance of compliance with airline safety regulations to ensure the security and comfort of all passengers.
