Kyiv was placed under a heightened state of alert on Saturday following reports of a combined missile and drone attack by Russian forces, according to statements from Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Mayor Klitschko announced via his official Telegram channel that air defenses had been activated in response to the attack. “Explosions in the capital. Air defenses have been activated. The city and the region are under a combined enemy attack,” he wrote.
The Ukrainian Air Force issued a warning about incoming ballistic missiles targeting the capital.
According to city officials, at least eight people were injured during the assault, with two hospitalized and others receiving medical attention at the scene. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s civil and military administration, confirmed the information provided by the mayor.
Ukrainian defense systems intercepted several drones and one missile overnight. The strike is one of the most significant to affect Kyiv in recent months and comes amid broader concerns about a possible escalation in hostilities as winter approaches.
Authorities emphasized that Kyiv’s air defense systems remain operational and are actively engaged in protecting the city.
Mayor Klitschko assured residents that measures are in place to respond to continued threats, and that officials are evaluating the situation and coordinating response efforts.
