MANILA, Philippines– The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) recently released data on the leading causes of death in the Philippines for the period between January and August 2024.
The report identifies ischemic heart diseases, neoplasms, and cerebrovascular diseases as the most prevalent causes of death during this time.
Ischemic heart diseases, also known as coronary heart diseases, were the primary cause, accounting for 67,856 deaths. This figure represents 19.7% of total deaths recorded in the country during the period. These conditions affect the supply of blood to the heart, often leading to serious health complications.
Neoplasms, which include various forms of cancer, ranked second among the causes of death. During the same period, 44,899 fatalities were attributed to these conditions. They accounted for 13% of the total mortality rate. Neoplasms can occur in many parts of the body, affecting different organs and tissues, and represent a significant health concern.
Cerebrovascular diseases, commonly known as stroke, were the third leading cause. These conditions resulted in 34,125 deaths, constituting 9.9% of the deaths reported. Strokes occur when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, leading to severe outcomes including death.
Healthcare officials emphasize the importance of addressing lifestyle factors that contribute to these diseases.
Diet, exercise, and regular health check-ups are among the recommended actions to reduce the risk. Public health campaigns continue to focus on educating the population about these preventive measures.
