A resident in McLennan County, Texas, discovered an unexploded bomb while renovating the attic of his home. The discovery, made during a remodeling project, led to a swift response from local authorities.
The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Fort Cavazos Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, which specializes in handling hazardous materials.
The EOD team identified the device as a 40mm Japanese bomblet from World War II.
Although inactive, the bomb still contained “explosive residue,” prompting the EOD to destroy it.
The homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, found the bomb hidden beneath old boxes and debris in a corner of the attic. Local neighbors were advised to stay indoors while authorities managed the situation.
Historical experts believe that the bomb may have been brought back to the U.S. as a souvenir by a returning World War II soldier.
Such discoveries are not uncommon, as many military artifacts from the era were stored in various locations over the years.
The EOD team followed established protocols to ensure public safety, including securing the area, assessing the bomb’s condition, and transporting it to a secure location for controlled detonation.
