MANILA, Philippines — Actress Judy Ann Santos has addressed the public’s reaction to Espantaho, a film set to compete in the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

In a statement to reporters, Santos expressed her appreciation for the variety of opinions the film has received, noting the role of audience feedback in the filmmaking process.

Espantaho is one of several films selected for the MMFF, an annual event that showcases Filipino films to a wide audience. The festival, scheduled for December, is a significant occasion in the Philippine entertainment industry, often drawing discussions about the themes and quality of its entries.

Santos stated that she values all forms of feedback, whether positive or negative, and considers it a natural part of releasing a creative work. She remarked that differing opinions are expected in the arts and can provide insights into how a film resonates with its audience.

The MMFF serves as a platform for local filmmakers and actors to present their work to the public. It is also a competition, with films vying for both box office success and critical recognition. Santos acknowledged the competitive environment and the role of public opinion in shaping a film’s reception.

Espantaho has already generated discussions ahead of its festival screening. Audience reactions, including both praise and criticism, are seen as part of the broader discourse surrounding the MMFF and its entries.

Santos also addressed the broader role of feedback in the industry, describing it as an integral aspect of the relationship between filmmakers and viewers. While she did not elaborate on specific critiques of Espantaho, she emphasized the importance of acknowledging diverse perspectives.
