COMELEC Urges DILG and PNP to Dismantle Private Armies Before 2025 Elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Philippines has issued a call to action for the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to dismantle private armed groups before the campaigning for the 2025 elections begins.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia reiterated the importance of addressing the issue of private armies, suggesting that eliminating these groups could help mitigate threats and intimidation directed at electoral officials. Garcia intends to request a detailed list of all private armed groups from the PNP. This will aid in the thorough identification and neutralization of these groups throughout the nation.

The PNP has already expressed willingness to intensify efforts against private armies and unlicensed firearms. PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil emphasized the importance of these measures in ensuring that the 2025 midterm elections proceed smoothly and without violence. The PNP’s operational plans include working closely with Comelec to address this issue effectively.

The joint effort between Comelec, DILG, and PNP aims to address concerns about election-related violence and ensure voter safety. The public sentiment about private armed groups has been one of concern due to their potential to influence electoral outcomes through intimidation and violence. The dismantling of these groups is seen as a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

Several national security experts have urged the swift implementation of policies to handle private armies. They suggest that a coordinated approach involving various government agencies will be necessary to dismantle these groups effectively. This would involve not only the PNP and Comelec but also possibly the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), to ensure comprehensive action.

The rising threats against poll officials have been a significant concern. Reports indicate an increase in incidents of harassment and threats against election workers, which could undermine the electoral process. The rise in such incidents has prompted the call for immediate actions to secure election-related environments and protect those involved in organizing and executing the elections.

The public discourse surrounding the issue of private armies and election safety has been heated. Many citizens express the necessity of protecting the electoral process to preserve democratic integrity. There is a strong push from civil society and various political observers for immediate government action on this matter.

The upcoming elections are a significant event in the Philippines, with potential implications for the nation’s political landscape. Ensuring their smooth conduct is of utmost importance to all stakeholders involved. The government’s commitment to addressing security threats related to elections is seen as a positive step towards safeguarding democracy in the country.
