California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of bird flu across the state.

The virus, primarily affecting dairy cows, has also shown sporadic transmission to humans within the United States.

The declaration provides additional resources and flexibility to state and local health authorities. It enables them to hire more staff, distribute necessary supplies, and collaborate efficiently with various agencies.

The emergency status also allows for quicker response measures to safeguard both public health and the agricultural sector.

The bird flu virus, technically known as avian influenza, has been circulating for years. It commonly spreads among wild birds, commercial poultry, and several mammal species.

In California, this particular strain has recently been detected in Southern California dairy cows.

It remains uncertain how long the state of emergency may last. Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and will adjust their strategies as necessary.

The public is encouraged to remain informed and adhere to any guidance or advisories issued by health authorities.
