DALLAS, Texas –Fort Worth City Council is facing criticism after choosing Jay Chapa as the sole finalist for the City Manager position.

Mayor Mattie Parker defended the selection process, describing it as flawless.

This controversy comes as Chapa, a former deputy city manager with 25 years of experience, is set to become Fort Worth’s first Hispanic city manager.

Despite the mayor’s assurances, some council members have questioned the transparency of the hiring process.

Chris Nettles and Jared Williams, both council members, have called for a restart of the process. Their concerns focus on the lack of public involvement and the need for a more thorough examination of candidates.

Chapa, who has spent years in various supervisory and management roles, is seen as a candidate with the expertise needed for the position. He has previously worked on several key development projects within Fort Worth, contributing to the city’s growth.

The salary of the new city manager also stirred controversy.

Reports indicate that Chapa would be the highest-paid city manager in the city’s history.

This financial aspect has further fueled public discussions about the city’s spending priorities and the justification for such a high salary amidst growing demands for fiscal responsibility.
