MANILA, Philippines — Several internet service providers in the Philippines reported network issues and outages Friday evening, Oct. 2, after an undersea cable segment connecting the country with Singapore reportedly went offline.
The University of the Philippines Diliman Network Helpdesk said the disruption affected connectivity as many upstream internet service providers rely on major undersea cable networks for international traffic.
The helpdesk warned users to expect slower internet speeds, higher latency and intermittent connectivity, particularly when accessing websites and services hosted overseas.
Internet outage tracker Downdetector also recorded an increase in complaints about internet connectivity involving several providers.
Padecoinc, an internet service provider, separately reported that an undersea cable segment connecting the Philippines and Hong Kong had also gone offline. The company said the incident affected overall network capacity and global internet connectivity.
Globe Telecom also issued an advisory about service disruptions affecting some customers.
“Globe customers may experience slow internet access for both mobile and broadband services due to a technical issue,” the company said.
Globe said it was working to restore normal service but did not specify whether the issue stemmed from the reported undersea cable disruptions.
Broadband service provider Coverage also said it was coordinating with its technical support teams to restore internet access.
