FENTON, Mo. — An Amazon delivery driver said an arrow crashed through his windshield while he delivered packages in a Fenton neighborhood on Labor Day, after a man testing a new crossbow accidentally overshot his target.
St. Louis County police said the man told officers he was testing the crossbow when the arrow missed its target and traveled into the neighborhood. Police classified the incident as an accident and have filed no charges.
Amazon driver Carl McCasland said he was in the back of his delivery van when he heard a loud noise. He then noticed several packages had holes in them before he saw the damage to the windshield.
“If I was in the front seat that could have impaled me,” McCasland said.
McCasland later stood on the road where the incident occurred and pointed toward the area where he believed the arrow came from. He said the arrow could have struck a nearby home or another person.
“You see how far it has to go, past all these trees and all these houses, straight into my vehicle,” he said.
The incident occurred days before Missouri’s bow hunting season began. Missouri Department of Conservation officials urged hunters to take precautions when practicing with bows and crossbows, especially in residential areas.
Dan Zarlenga, a department spokesperson, said people should place a hill or berm behind their targets to stop arrows that miss.
McCasland said the incident has affected his mental health. He said Amazon has checked on him regularly and assigned him easier delivery routes while he recovers from the experience.
