SAN ANTONIO — The City of San Antonio is asking residents to identify dangerous streets and crosswalks near schools as the new school year brings more students, pedestrians and vehicles onto local roads.
The city is seeking public input through its “Keep Crossings SAfe” initiative to identify locations that need additional safety improvements, particularly along roads designated as High Injury Networks.
Joe Conger, a spokesperson for the city’s Transportation Department, said increased traffic from school drop-offs and pickups creates additional safety challenges.
“We have a lot of school zones. We’ve got kids headed back to school. We’ve got parents in drop-off lines,” Conger said.
The city’s High Injury Network identifies areas with high concentrations of conflicts involving vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Residents can use the city’s online “Keep Crossings SAfe” website to identify trouble spots. The map highlights High Injury Network streets in yellow and allows users to place pins at locations where they see safety concerns and suggest improvements.
Conger said school zones require particular attention as students and adults navigate streets and crosswalks.
He urged drivers to slow down in school zones and avoid U-turns near schools. He also encouraged parents and children to use designated crosswalks.
The city said community input will help guide targeted safety improvements as San Antonio works to reduce serious injuries and deaths on its roadways.
