Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch put on hold indefinitely

MANILA — A planned rematch between boxing legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao has been postponed indefinitely, Pacquiao’s camp in the Philippines announced Friday, citing legal disputes, scheduling conflicts and financial issues involving Mayweather’s camp.

The announcement came after ESPN reported that Mayweather’s scheduled exhibition bout in Greece had been canceled after an events company connected to the proposed Pacquiao rematch sought an injunction.

The fighters have disagreed over the nature of the proposed September bout since Mayweather said it would only be an exhibition. Pacquiao’s camp disputed that claim.

In a statement, Pacquiao’s camp attributed the postponement to “a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock” involving Mayweather’s camp.

Events company CSI filed a lawsuit against Mayweather last week seeking to recover at least $4.65 million. The company said it paid the boxer for exclusive promotional rights to the Pacquiao rematch and a separate exhibition fight against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson that did not take place.

Pacquiao’s camp said the earliest the rematch could now be held is early 2027.

The statement added that if Mayweather and CSI resolve their contractual dispute outside court, promoters plan to reschedule the postponed Mayweather-Tyson exhibition, tentatively targeting Sept. 12.

Mayweather, who retired in 2017 with a 50-0 professional record, had been scheduled to face Greek kickboxing star Mike Zambidis in an exhibition in Athens on Saturday.

The proposed rematch would have reunited the two Hall of Fame boxers, whose 2015 fight generated 4.6 million pay-per-view purchases.
