HOUSTON — Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history on Tuesday after scoring for Portugal in a Group K match against Uzbekistan at Houston Stadium, becoming the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Ronaldo, 41, opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he converted a cross from João Cancelo to give Portugal a 1-0 lead. He celebrated the goal with teammates near the bench.
The goal extended Ronaldo’s World Cup scoring record across six tournaments, having previously scored in the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.
The milestone came after Ronaldo was held scoreless in Portugal’s opening match, a 1-1 draw against Congo.
Earlier in the tournament, Ronaldo and Argentina captain Lionel Messi became the first men to appear in six FIFA World Cups.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, features 48 teams competing in 104 matches from June 11 to July 19. The tournament final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium.
