Doubts over Neymar’s availability for Brazil’s World Cup opener persisted Monday after the forward underwent additional medical tests on his injured right leg, according to the Brazilian football confederation.
Neymar did not take part in training with the Brazil squad and instead visited a clinic for examinations on his right calf. Officials did not immediately release the results of the tests.
The 34-year-old forward, playing in his fourth World Cup, has not trained fully with the team since Brazil began preparations in Morristown, New Jersey. He has been sidelined since sustaining the injury while playing for Santos on May 17.
Brazil is scheduled to face Haiti on Friday in Philadelphia. Neymar has not participated in any full training sessions since the start of the tournament buildup.
Brazilian media reported that the national team’s medical staff aims to have Neymar fit for the knockout stage if he is not cleared to play in the group phase.
Neymar’s potential absence comes after Brazil opened its World Cup campaign with a 1–1 draw against Morocco. He attended the match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where he appeared on the sidelines before kickoff.
Three other players—Gabriel Magalhães, Bruno Guimarães and Raphinha—also trained separately on Monday as they continued fitness work.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has faced questions over Neymar’s selection, with some analysts arguing the veteran forward could still provide experience while others have raised concerns about squad balance.
Neymar and his partner, Bruna Biancardi, announced on social media on Monday that they are expecting a child. Neymar has a son from a previous relationship.
