LUBBOCK, Texas — Texas Tech University officials publicly defended quarterback Brendan Sorsby in a video released Thursday, following a court ruling that temporarily restored his eligibility after the NCAA imposed a permanent ban related to sports betting activity.

The nearly 21-minute video featured Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec, Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt, head football coach Joey McGuire, and senior athletics administrator Grant Stovall.

University officials released the video amid criticism surrounding Sorsby’s return to competition after a Lubbock County judge temporarily blocked an NCAA ruling that had declared him permanently ineligible.

During the video, university leaders characterized Sorsby’s conduct as a gambling addiction issue and outlined measures they said Texas Tech has implemented to monitor and support the quarterback. Officials cited counseling and device monitoring among the safeguards in place.

The officials also rejected claims that Sorsby’s reinstatement threatens the integrity of competition.

The NCAA previously ruled Sorsby permanently ineligible after determining that he placed approximately 9,000 sports wagers, according to university officials and court filings.

The public defense came one day after Ken Paxton warned the Big 12 Conference against taking action against Texas Tech in response to the court ruling.

It remains unclear whether the Big 12 Conference or the National Collegiate Athletic Association will pursue additional disciplinary or legal measures related to the case.

The court order allowing Sorsby to play remains temporary while legal proceedings continue.
