MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University said it is coordinating with authorities and providing support to the families of the two men’s basketball players who died during a team activity in Aurora, including efforts to facilitate an autopsy and the repatriation of remains.
The school confirmed that, at the request of the family, an autopsy will be conducted on Rene Baterbonia, with coordination involving the National Bureau of Investigation and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.
For the second victim, Divine Adili, Ateneo said arrangements are being made to fly his remains to Nigeria in accordance with his family’s wishes and cultural practices. The university said it is assisting with the required documentation.
Ateneo also said it has coordinated support services for the bereaved families and confirmed that the basketball team has returned to Manila following the incident.
The university added that all team members will undergo counseling and psychological support sessions through the College Guidance Office.
The tragedy occurred during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, and has prompted a broader review of safety and welfare measures within the program.
Coach Tab Baldwin has not yet issued a public statement on the incident.
