The City of San Antonio has completed its largest rooftop solar installation to date, placing the system on top of the Ron Darner Parks and Recreation Headquarters on the Far West Side along Old Highway 90.

City officials said the project is part of a broader push to cut energy costs and reduce emissions across municipal buildings. Doug Melnick, the city’s assistant director of resiliency and sustainability, said the installation will offset roughly 70–80% of the building’s electricity use.

He added that the system will not only improve environmental outcomes but also generate significant savings for taxpayers, estimating about $130,000 in annual utility cost reductions.

The project marks a major milestone in San Antonio’s $30 million solar initiative, which began after City Council approval in 2023. The program aims for zero net energy across all city facilities by 2040 and is considered the first and largest municipal solar effort of its kind in Texas.

It currently includes more than 50 rooftop and parking canopy solar installations across city-owned properties.

Once fully completed, officials project the program will generate about $1.8 million in annual savings, offset around 11% of the city’s total electricity consumption, and reduce municipal emissions by approximately 18%.
