The film centers on Hathaway’s character, Mother Mary, who searches for a sense of self as she prepares for a new stage performance. During this period, she reconnects with her former designer and estranged friend Sam, played by Michaela Coel, who once played a stabilizing role in her life before fame altered their relationship.
