MANILA, Philippines — Former child actress Xyriel Manabat is stepping into the spotlight with her first lead role in a film, Netflix Philippines’ upcoming 18th Rose.
Speaking at Netflix’s trade launch, Manabat admitted she became emotional recalling the moment she was offered the role. “It’s not just a dream come true. It was also an answered prayer, and I’m very grateful to those who trusted me,” she said.
Set in Romblon during the 2000s, 18th Rose follows the story of Rose (Manabat) and Jordan (played by Kyle Echarri) as they chase their shared dream of making music. Manabat said connecting with her character came naturally. “Everything came across naturally because I believe in Rose, and I have such an interest in Rose,” she shared. “I fell in love with Rose. Creating and portraying her was magical.”
Director Dolly Dulu described the project as “an opportunity of a lifetime” for Manabat, who began her career in 2009 and previously had a lead role in the TV drama 100 Days to Heaven.
The actress noted that her long-standing friendship with Echarri helped bring their on-screen chemistry to life. “Transitioning with Kyle was meaningful for the sake of the show, it was smooth and it felt effortless also,” she said.
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for 18th Rose, as well as additional details about the film’s storyline.
