Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday ordered state agencies to investigate potential fraud in the Texas Medicaid program after federal officials under the Trump administration reported possible Medicaid fraud in other states and directed the agencies to implement additional anti-fraud measures in the program.
Abbott issued the directive in a letter that he sent to state officials who oversee Medicaid administration in Texas.
He instructed the agencies to review current Medicaid operations, identify vulnerabilities that could enable fraudulent activity, and strengthen procedures that prevent and detect improper payments.
Moreover, Abbott expanded his previous call for stronger anti-fraud investigations in state programs to specifically include Texas Medicaid through this letter.
The governor notified the agencies that his office expects them to apply the additional anti-fraud measures consistently across the Medicaid program in Texas.
