Millions in unclaimed property up for grabs in Bexar County, Texas comptroller says

The Texas Comptroller’s office announced on Monday in Austin that Bexar County residents and businesses can claim millions of dollars in unclaimed property through the state’s program.

Officials said the unclaimed funds include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, utility deposits, payroll checks, vendor payments, mineral royalties, stocks, and some safe deposit box contents.

Businesses and financial institutions report dormant accounts to the state after a statutory waiting period, and the comptroller holds the assets until the rightful owner or authorized heir files a claim.

Claims can be filed online at no cost, and the office requires documentation such as identification, proof of address, or ownership records. Heirs may submit death certificates, wills, or probate documents to claim property on behalf of deceased owners.

The comptroller’s staff reviews each claim before approving the release of funds or property, and processing times vary based on claim complexity. Officials said Texas holds unclaimed property indefinitely and encourages residents to check the database regularly, as new reports are submitted annually.

The office also provides phone and mail support for questions or assistance with claims, aiming to reunite owners with funds and assets held under state custody.
