WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced a $12 billion financial aid package to assist American farmers affected by tariffs and trade tensions.
The program targets producers of soybeans, corn, pork, dairy, and other commodities, particularly those impacted by retaliatory measures from key trading partners such as China.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will administer the package, which includes direct payments, government purchases of agricultural products, and funding for trade promotion in alternative markets. Officials said the measure is temporary and intended to help farmers manage losses while trade negotiations continue.
USDA guidance and eligibility rules are under development, and local Farm Service Agency offices will serve as primary points of contact for producers. Lawmakers and agricultural groups are reviewing the program’s formulas, rollout schedule, and potential impacts on rural economies.
