WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has ordered a review of refugees who entered the United States during the presidency of Joe Biden.

An internal memo states that officials will examine whether these refugees meet the legal requirements to remain in the country.

According to the memo, the review will evaluate documentation and background information for each case. The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will participate in collecting records and conducting assessments.

The memo says the purpose of the review is to verify compliance with U.S. immigration laws and national security procedures. It does not specify how long the review will take or how many refugees will be included.

Refugee advocates have expressed concern that the process could result in removals. Some lawmakers have issued statements supporting the review, while others have criticized it. These reactions reflect existing divisions in public discussions on immigration and refugee policy.

The Biden administration previously increased refugee admissions. The Trump administration’s directive follows that change in admissions policy.

As the review begins, organizations that work with refugees have stated they are monitoring the development and preparing to respond to any outcomes.

Administration officials said the review will focus on legal compliance and security requirements.
