AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has authorized the deployment of Texas National Guard members to Illinois and Oregon to assist federal immigration enforcement, a move that contrasts with his previous statements defending state authority over National Guard units.

Abbott said the deployments are aimed at supporting public safety and emphasized his coordination with former President Donald Trump. Legal experts note that past governors, including Abbott, have opposed federal actions that they viewed as infringing on state control of the Guard.

The deployment remains under legal review. Federal judges temporarily blocked the movement after Illinois and Oregon filed lawsuits, arguing it violates the 10th Amendment. Some Texas troops have returned to the state, while others remain at Fort Bliss, pending a Supreme Court decision.

Abbott’s office has not provided additional comment.
